Terrence, from what I know of Al Checchi, I would have to agree that he seems to be kind of evil--at least a hypocrite. I liked Jane Harman at first, but her positions do not seem to be fully formed. Gray Davis has experience in office, but a couple of weeks ago I passed him in what seemed to be his PRIVATE car, that he was driving himself, with no passengers whatsoever, and the California vanity license plates said LT GOV. I cannot decide whether it was simply ego, or what, which motivated him to have plates like that. Certainly, it would seem to create a security risk. Maybe he is very heavily armed!!! I just thought it was weird, but can not exactly articulate why.

Whether a society executes criminals is, to me, very much something that might be subject to change, and certainly should be arrived at with some sort of consensus. Are there any other western industrial nations that still kill their prisoners? A lot of Europeans think we are totally barbaric, and in fact France and Canada have given us extradition problems in the last few years, over that guy who killed his wife and left his baby on the sidewalk, whose name escapes me at the moment, and mass murderer Charles Ng, respectively, because we still have the death penalty.

So no, the concept of "at the moment" does not disturb me, and I think it is healthy that we have an ongoing debate about the death penalty. We are, in fact, totally at odds with most first world peoples about this, so it might be very helpful to continue to debate the issue.
