Haven't time to post at length now; however I agree that a secure and loving home environment is more likely to produce well-adjusted adults than are situations in which children feel to varying degrees unwanted or uncared-for.

But I also tend to think there are a hell of a lot more real sociopaths out there than is normally believed. Probably most are functional, at least to the extent that they don't allow themselves to do exactly as they please because they realize that would be counter-productive. When upset or thwarted, though, they tend to lose it in unpleasant ways. And with stress on the rise in today's society, we may be seeing more of that than we did back in the fifties, for example.
