Staples is a funky, poorly staffed/stocked store. Office Depot is the opposite (it's almost too slick).

I've lived on both coasts, and have seen lots of Office Depots and Staples - never been in an Office Max.

ODP deserves to be the preeminent player going forward. (could have said that about Apple and Sony Beta-Max, too, I suppose). Certainly on a stock valuation basis, ODP is the much better value of the two.
