George,

It's just calling a spade a spade. I don't feel hatred, but I don't think that euphemism is appropriate either. From Webster's: bum, "one who sponges off others and avoids work". I used the word in this precise meaning. When I see one of these people with their hand out towards me, all I can think is "get a job". On the other hand I once had a man come up to me in a disadvantaged part of Oakland, wanting to sell me a ring for 10 or 20 dollars, so he could hire transportation to get to his probation appointment. I gave him the money and told him to keep the ring. What's the difference? The tiniest sense of someone attempting to help himself.

Those that won't help themselves condemn themselves, and with our current government programs, they indirectly limit me. I feel neither hatred nor sympathy towards them, merely dispassion. I didn't make them losers, and there's nothing I can do about it unless they take the first step. And that's something more than walking into the Welfare office or sitting on a street corner.
