Bluetooth Alliance. An Alliance named Bluetooth (http://www.bluetooth.com) came forward last week and they are doing a lot of interesting things. In a nutshell, the Alliance is developing a specification for wireless connectivity between mobile devices such as laptop computers, cellular telephones, peripherals (e.g. printers, digital cameras, mouse, keyboard, scanners), and Local Area Networks. Some of the things that you will be able to do with Bluetooth conformant products are: 1. Connect to the Internet or your office server with a laptop and cellular telephone. 2. Connect computers to peripheral devices without the use of cables. 3. Connect computers to a LAN without cables of any kind. 4. Connect a headset to a cellular phone or laptop without wires. This will turn your laptop and cellular phone into hands-free speaker phones. 5. Synchronize your address book and calendar between your cellular phone, laptop, and desktop computer via a wireless connection. 6. Conduct a wireless meeting whereby participants can send images to a projector from their laptop without wires or cables. 7. Scan email on your cellular phone. Your laptop will transmit a signal to your cellular phone when email is received. No wires needed. 8. Send email from your laptop through your cellular phone using a wireless connection. Maybe I'm just a technology buff, but I think this is really exciting stuff and it will expand the market for mobile devices. The way to grow a market when it starts slowing down is to develop new technology and that's what this Alliance is doing. The five companies that started the Bluetooth Alliance are Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia, and Toshiba. Others to join include Axis, Cetecom, Compaq, 3Com (Palm, Megahertz, 3com, USR), Dell, Lucent, Motorola, Puma, Qualcomm, Symbionics, TDK, VLSI (my beloved gg), and Xircom. The Alliance is planning to demonstrate products that conform to the specification at the Demo PC Expo in June 98 and at Comdex in September 98. Dan
