Here's more bad news for S3--the following site says that Intel 740i will be next ViRGE.

And here's what it says about Savage

Glen,
Integrating the Intel i740 into the processor will not be a big threat
to S3. This device is being designed for the Sub $1000.00 PC's.
By the time Intel does this in the Q2 99 S3 will be releasing the
next graphics chipset ( Vortex or whatever ). S3 will participate
in the high end and mainstream market.
Ted, I believe you posted the article about the Savage. From what
I have read this sounds like a very good product but time will tell.
S3 has to get this into volume production ASAP. I disagree with
the writer that this is S3 last shot at making it. They still have
plenty of cash to get them through a few more bad quarters plus
if necessary they could sell of a little more of the fab or use there
credit line. IMHO they need to have a successful product by the
end of 99 or they will be in big financial trouble. The Savage
should get them back to profitability, worst case break even for
a few quarters. Thanks for the info.
