But I wouldn't have raised this question (of "internet laziness", to use Wisam's felicitous expression) at all if my own posts had not been misread (or only partly read) on a number of occasions.

I believe I have been guilty of this in the past with you, even though your posts are always well written and clear. I later found out to my dismay that I had not read a portion of your post correctly. It is only on the few occasions that I read a post only once, that this misunderstanding occurred. Normally, if I am going to respond to a post, I feel compelled to read it 2-3 times.

On the question of where the guilt lies for misunderstanding, I agree with you. Sometimes even well written English is misunderstood because of a failing in the reader. But from a practical standpoint, I am in control of what I write but not how people read it. Therefore, I continually try to improve my communications skills, and when I find someone who consistently misreads me, I stop responding to them. At the bottom of all this, however, is a belief, which is perhaps arrogant or naive (or both), that the power of words combined with a judicious mix of intelligence and truth will prevail.
