Those are good points. I think the transition to FC has also been slowed by the fact that 1 Gbps was too fast for available storage until recently. Hennessy and Patterson's text on Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach - points out (p41) that from an I/O perspective the bandwidth decreases and the latency increases significantly with distance from the CPU. Until the bandwidth at the slowest device increased enough - you don't need FC. In fact until recently all of the big storage companies have been using SCSI to set storage records.
