Christine, thanks for the info re witches. I'll look for the video you mentioned.

Your description of when the uncivilized practice of wife beating began brought back some memories. While growing up my sister & I observed that the practice was more pronounced in certain nationalities. We lived in a multi-cultured neighborhood. When my sister met the man she would marry, she prayed fervently & refused to say yes to his proposals because he was from one of the nationalities we noticed had more men who abused their wives. Finally, after 5 yrs. she said yes to his marriage proposal. They're now married 25 yrs. He's always been a wonderful husband & father in every way. Maybe the 5 yrs of prayer didn't hurt<vbg>

It's amazing how any attempt to esteem a female figure in any way was stifled. You mentioned mary, the token woman afforded some respect. Even the esteem accorded her has been ridiculed through the ages.

When Sam explained that there are many passage in the bible that seem to support the abuse of women, I was shocked. I'd spent little time reading excerpts and have come to the conclusion the past week that it was fortunate that I hadn't.

Sam's remarks prompted me to check out some Encyclopedia Brittanica information. Seems this negative attitude towards women was present in certain cultures & not in others. Many races that had previously worshipped goddesses did not have these anti-female prejudices.

It's really fascinating, isn't it. Certainly can consider ourselves fortunate that we were born when we were.

Better say goodbye or netscape will do it for me<ggg>

take care, Ann
