PLACER DOME FORECASTS GOLD BOOM Bill Hayes, President of Placer Dome Latin America, yesterday predicted that Latin America could be enjoying a "gold boom" within two or three years because of its rich mineral deposits and political stability. Although gold prices are currently low, Placer Dome will be investing one third of its world-wide exploration budget in Chile, or about U$45 million, he said. Hayes also predicted that gold prices will eventually rise back to its traditional benchmark level of US$400 per ounce. In Chile Placer Dome owns a 51 percent interest in Cerro Cassal, as well as the Can Can and La Coipa deposits.
