Well DD, I've been on a sabatical at linux EXPO 98. It was three days last week down in North Carolina at Duke University.

I listened with fascination as a couple of rocket scientists from Los Alamos described how they are using SGI's to create the biggest Super Computer on earth and also how they are fully supporting Linux Extreme, that is to say creating super computers with low cost PC's and high speed inter networking. They explained the limitations of linux boxes and their disadvantage in I/O and memory bandwidth. On the other hand their are thousands of problems that fit comfortably in to a linux extreme super computer and they cost as little as a tenth of an equivalent SGI.

I also bought a copy of the first Linux Extreme distribution CD that will allow any college, high school or even elementary school create a super computer and teach super computer programing using discarded 386 and 486 and pentiums computers. The CD cost me $20 and it comes with a license that allows me to install it on as many machines as I'd like and it's also perfectly legal for me to make as many copies as I'd like, and I can give them away or sell them. Not a bad deal.

I also listened to a presentation from some other Rocket Scientists from CERN. That's the European Lab that kinda invented the WWW and they also collide particles and look for mythical characters like charm and quark and boson and such. Anyway they talked about how they were developing HIPPI drivers for linux boxes as the 16 to 20 megabytes of TCP/IP performance they were getting fit perfectly into the system requirement for many of their experiments. I didn't have a clue as to what the experiments were for.

I also attended a business track and a technical track lecture from a dude from Digital Domain about how linux was used with dec alpha's to create the computer graphics in Titanic. Digital Domain would like to have used a lot more SGI, but the DD shareholders kinda wanted them to make money and so the used linux on dec alpha systems.

I also attended a really fun lecture by a guy from Pixar. He went through all the steps of creating animated charaters using TOY STORY stuff as an example. He also discussed how pixar was also using linux Extreme and SGI's.

I also had long discussions with some IT guys from Purdue and Duke.
Basically they said that the Universities were giving up on using NT and were persueing using linux. The Perdue guys said THE BORG gave them a free complete NT developers license. This is because when the BORG guy visited them the Perdue guys said.

"Hey we may be really dumb and don't know this NT. If we are doing something wrong and dumb, please just tell us, we just want to get this stuff to work."

They then proceded to list all the things that just did not work.

The Borg guy said over and over, "Oh yeah, that a bug sorry.
Finally the BORG guy finally said. "This NT stuff is really sucky."

Anyway the got the developer support package used to build NT.
ALL 40 CD's, They then received and update package containing 15 CD's The Perdue guys figured they just didn't have the budget to pay someone who only job it would be is to figure out what is in the NT developers Package.

The Perdue guy's came to the conclusion that linux was a cost effective way to cure BORG viruses.

The Duke IT guys seem to conclude the same thing along similar problems.

Oh I seem to be getting a new house call every day. Oh the agony of defeat. But I still got my 10k SGI.

Anyway, Any of you out there who got this far, Buy some Aplx, If it drops below 4.00, I'm in deep )&(*&()&. So give this fellow a break and buy at market.

Remember, An INtel Processor is a terrible thing to infect with a BORG virus unless it resides in a system built by SGI in PerU.
