[torrino 2000 as adsl deployment might be a stretch] hi eric, spent some time last fall trying to figure out wstl's involvement with torrino 2000... and since you brought it up... guess i feel that wstl was being a bit misleading with that press release... the way it is worded, sounds like torrino 2000 was essentially a commercial adsl large scale deployment... after sorting thru as much as i could find, this doesn't appear to be the case... rather than commercial, it seems like it was more of a municipal experiment in the city of turin for ip over an atm backbone.. where a variety of customer premises equipment were being provided at no charge by telecom italia... for use within the city (no other access without xtra $)... telecom italia was interested in studying use, interest in applications, traffic patterns etc... while adsl played a role in torrino 2000, it certainly wasn't the focus... adsl was only one of something like seven types of broadband customer premises equipment provided... besides adsl... the project included atm switches, ip routers, frame relay, cable modems, a-pon, and isdn.. only adsl and isdn used copper pairs for the access network, the rest used fiber to the premises. If there was an area of particular interest to telecom italia it would seem to be "Socrate" (italian acronym for fibre-coax). altho city-wide, it seems relatively modest in that they were shooting for about 500 broadband users when geared up ... including all cpe listed above... what percentage of the 500 were adsl? your guess is as good as mine... also most of the sexy stuff ( videoconferencing, teleconsulting etc) mentioned in wstl's press release.. seem to be fiber to the premises (not adsl)... and while wstl did describe it as a three year project, they neglected to mention that it started early 96 and will be over this year... sorry for going on so long, but that press release rubbed me the wrong way..... for more rambling here's an earlier post with links with probably more detail than you or anyone else cares to sift thru:exchange2000.com in any case would expect that all this little stuff will become moot(?) in the not too distant future .. expect some adsl deployment news from telecom italia this year or maybe next... haven't heard if there is a tender out yet... but telecom italia has been trialing for years... besides turin there's also (at least) rome and milan... at last count rome and milan were up to something like 1000 lines (combined)... would expect both orctf and wstl to be in the running for the deployment... along with all the usual suspects.. :) see ya s
