IBM offers PC based on Intel Celeron chip

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., May 26 (Reuters) - International Business Machines Corp unveiled
on Tuesday a new desktop personal computer based on Intel Corp's (INTC - news) low-cost Celeron
processor.

IBM said the new model, which will be added to its PC 300GL commercial line of computers, will be
available at estimated reseller prices starting at $969, making it IBM's first commercial desktop to debut at
under $1,000.

While IBM has other systems in its commercial lineup priced lower, those are discounted older models.

Intel launched Celeron in April to combat growing competition in the low end of the PC market from
Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD - news) and National Semiconductor Corp's (NSM - news) Cyrix unit.

IBM currently uses a mix of Intel and AMD processors in its consumer PC models but has kept its corporate
lineup strictly Intel-based.

The first new Celeron models will be based on Intel's 266 megahertz (MHz) version of the chip. Models
based on a 300 MHz Celeron will be announced when that version becomes available.

Jim, re:Besides, the Celeron was DOA...

I think you'll eat those words...Super Socket 7 is imo DOA. 300Mhz Celeron in a few weeks and higher speed grades WITH CACHE in September (just a few months away)..by that time, maybe K6-DUD will actually have some software support <ggg>. Plus, Intel will have a few surprises under their sleeve as well...

What happened to the big AMD run-up for K6-DUD??? Not very impressive benchmarks...Not very impressive OEM support...Jerry better go back to hyping again to get the stock back up to $30.
