I don't know to what extent Sun's java platform is incompatible accross platform, but what the plugin gives them is control over these platforms. There may be incompatibility problems now (I don't know) but you can bet that they are working hard to resolve them. If they wouldn't, then Java truly would be a joke. The java plugin gives them a stable target - the control they lack with Microsoft Java. Jdk 1.2 will resolve the performance issues and add a ton of new features; with the plug-in, they give apps server administrator the option to write to the Sun jvm and support both IE and Netscape. When Sun irons out the incompatibility problems, (and you can bet that they will if indeed these exist), Java's promise will be at hand.
