Gore for President? Surely you jest. By the time the next elections come around the country will be so tired of the current administrations and DNCs sleaze that Gore won't have a chance.
You just saw the effect of Clinton begging the pakistanis not to test nuclear weapons. They laughed in our faces...and where do you supposed the kids went to college to gain the technology to make those nuclear devices? Meanwhile the FTC attacks our own companies at home at the benefit of foreign companies waiting to jump on the opportunity.
I hope those on the left coast have learned a lesson but I doubt it.
Besides, the turmoil around y2k might just change the whole political environment as we know it.
Jim

Jacob, OFF TOPIC >>>"Gore is a techo-nerd,"<<<

What, are all technical people nerds, or an even better one geeks? How about if we call all you MD's sawbones? No big deal, but a pet peeve. Even the SJ Mercury News uses the terms geeks and nerds in their paper, even though their livelihood, and any growth they experience, largely depends on these types.I personally look at the Internet far more than any paper publications anymore.

Tony

<On the other hand, he may have decided that the Wintel monopoly is hobbling progress.>

If you listened to the realaudio of the government's action against Microsoft, this is exactly the point they make - that the technology
sector is very, very important for America's future; too important for it to be smothered by large monopolies. Actually Bill Gates, bless his poor uneducated heart, says the same thing - he compared the suit against MS to the suit against IBM, which distracted IBM and made them amenable to releasing the ownership rights for DOS to the small upstart that MS, in those days, was. He vowed that history would not repeat itself. Then in the next breath he says how great MS has been for the development of the industry and for consumers - ie. Bill, by his own reasoning, knows Justice did the right thing to IBM when it was a monopoly by giving MS a chance. Now that MS is the monopoly Justice must clip it's wings.

Re: <<Gore . . . would not be inclined to hobble technological progress.>>

Who says that breaking up Microsoft would hobble technological progress? It is more likely to advance technological progress, as smaller, more innovative firms could then invest in new development without fear of being copied and trampled over by Microsoft. It is well known that Microsoft is more of a copier than an innovator.

Breaking up Microsoft would likely lead to a new burst of energy for the software industry, just as the oil and telephone industries boomed after the trust-busters got to Standard Oil and AT&T. And I, for one, resent the fact that when I finally upgrade from Windows 3.1 to Windows 98, it will cost me some $200, which seems to me to be a large premium to pay for something as basic as an operating system -- especially if it includes applications that I have no interest in using, such as Internet Explorer.
