Charles: re: "when I finally upgrade from Windows 3.1 to Windows 98"

I notice you use a MSFT product, and intend to upgrade to another one. You do have choices, you know. You could buy a Mac (VBG).

And, re. that "very large premium", you've obviously made the same decision the rest of the market for desktop OS has made-you may resent it, but you're going to pay it, because it's worth it to you. BTW, what do you want to do, that you can't do with Win 3.1, or Win 95, but will be able to do with Win 98?

Charles, << I, for one, resent the fact that when I finally upgrade from Windows 3.1 to Windows 98, it will cost me some $200, which seems to me to be a large premium to pay for something as basic as an operating system -- especially if it includes applications that I have no interest in using, such as Internet Explorer>>

If you resent paying $200 for an upgrade, then don't upgrade to Windows 98.

Unless of coarse, you decide that you'd really like to have the upgrade in which case it must have at least $200 worth of utility to you.

You can't have it both ways. You can't think you need it and not think it's worth paying something for.

No one is holding a gun to your head and telling you to upgrade - are they?

Barry

The only logical course, then, is DON'T BUY IT! A free market can correct itself quite nicely by "voting" with its dollars. MSFT wouldn't succeed if people didn't LIKE and WANT the products it offers. The market dictates MSFT failures, too. See also: Microsoft Bob social interface!
