your points are well taken about island politics...and I
appreciate the fact that our discussion, although started
a bit harsh on both sides (I apologize for my role
in its degeneration), has improved into a quality discussion...

as far as the current republican candidate for Governor...

****a couple issues of been high on the agenda recently****

GET tax increase +++ the Governor formed a task force of big
business leaders (banks) and government union leaders last
fall to revitilize the economy. The Economic Revitalization
Task Force (ERTF) proposed substantial personal and corporate
income tax relief to be paid for by increasing the general excise
tax. +++ This was seen by many as shifting the tax burden on
those least able to pay for it and giving the biggest break to the
banks and powers that be. +++ Republicans strongly opposed this
and in fact the ERTF tax shift failed because of groundswell of grass
roots opposition and maverick Democrats in the state Senate
including an uprising potential leader Senator Randy Iwase.

Privitization *** this is also a hot issue because the state Supreme
Court has sided with the government worker's unions in effectively shutting down much of local government's ability to go outside of the bloated civil service system and privitize government function.

the Republican candidate for governor Maui Mayor Linda Lingle has been
a proponent of privitization (this does not mean she believes all services are best privatized, however.)

there are a substantial number of other reforms which are on the
backburner because of Democratic rule --- Inititiative, referendum, and recall are not part of the Hawaii Constitition because they weaken the established powers that be.)

I will going to the mainland shortly myself for a job assignment
so I may be off the internet for a little while. But, I appreciate
your discussion and I will check back to this thread in a while.

I may also suggest that www.starbulletin.com is a web sight for our afternoon paper and it has a good word search feature.

Aloha.
