X,

You seem to imply that age discrimination exists only among restaurant workers. I know and you know that there are laws against age or any other form of discrimination, yet such still exists, but that's another post for perhaps another thread.

If a person is that violently opposed to smoke, there are many, MANY other low-level jobs or jobs requiring minimal skills to choose from where they could enjoy a smoke-free environment--particularly in the Bay Area counties of Northern California.

Back to your original point, I see many older men and women working in the dinner houses and classier bars and supper clubs. I cannot explain why our experiences should be so different.

"They don't think- "oooh, it is either waitressing or investment banking- you know I think I would rather be a waitress."

That is exactly the choice my sister made. She is extremely good-looking, especially when she was in her 20s. She has three degrees and was offered a job with a Wall Street firm some years ago because she wanted to waitress instead. She did it for 2 years in Cheyenne, Wyoming cowboy bars and later in Salt Lake City. It didn't hurt her life one bit. She moved on to other things and today lives in Orange County, married to a doctor, lives in a multi-million dollar home and has Chuck Norris as a nearby neighbor.

I look SMASHING in the prescribed garments. But I am loath to shave below the Adam's-apple, and my short-term memory is not up to the job of keeping the orders straight.
That has always impressed me - the waiters who remember a tableful of orders with all the little custom requests with a low error rate!
