<<So what is the advantage of K6-2 here ?>>

If I ask you the same question, So what is the advantage of the EXPENSIVE PII-300 here?

The advantages of K6-2 over PII?

1) K6-2 can execute maximum 4 floating point per clock cycle compared to 1 clock for PII. K6-2-300 can do 1.3GFLOPs while PII-400 can do 400MFLOPs. It is up to the software programmers to harness the FULL POTENTIAL of the K6-2.

2) K6-2 IS CHEAPER! K6-2-300 OUTPERFORMS PII-300 by at least 10% on 3D Winstone. K6-2-300 is less than 1% slower than the PII-400.

3) People of socket 7 can upgrade Pentium to K6-2 without buying a MB.

4) MB of socket 7 is about $50-$70 cheaper than slot 1 MB.

Games such as QUAKE II that was benchmarked for the K6-2 is not completely optimize for the K6-2. Once fully optimize the K6-2 will run much faster than what posted. As you can see game such as Incoming is yet to 100% extract the power of the AMD 3D engine. The bottom line is that the performance improvement depends on how clever the programmers write the code. The 3DNOW! concept is clearly the next level in microprocessor which Intel is behind and yet to release.

The moral of this story is that there is NO NEED TO GO TO SLOT1. Intel is just making an excuse to rape the consumers and to lock competitors out. No wonder the DOJ is after Intel. Socket 7 is just AS GOOD AND EVEN BETTER. AMD has proven so.

<<Now if you are running Quake II(which seems to be the best 3DNow! optimized game), K6-2-300 is on par with PII 300(within 1-2% difference).>>

According to Boot Magazine, they don't agree with you.

bootnet.com

GL QUAKEII------K6-2-333-------PII-333
640 X 480-------71.3fps--------68.8fps
800 X 600-------71.3fps--------62.0fps
1024 X 768------62.2fps--------44.7fps-----WOW!

Ouch!

Gary,
I tend to believe the street prices. I think AMD pulled a pricing fast one on Intel. They will price it competitively vs the Celeron and very competitively against the Pentium II. Remember if the yields are there then the small die size has the advantage.

Gary Ng: You say, Now if you are running Quake II(which seems to
be the best 3DNow! optimized game), K6-2-300 is on par
with PII 300(within 1-2% difference).

NOT
In BOOT magazines gaming system (two 3D accelerators) we fine
that the Intel system cannot feed the accelerators enough
information to keep them running full speed, especially at
high resolution. AMD system is 15% faster at 800x600 resolution
(pretty crappy for a 17" monitor) and 39% faster for 1024x768.

GLQuake II 333MHz-K6-2 333MHz Pentium II
640x480 71.3fps 68.8fps
800x600 71.3fps 62.0fps
1024x768 62.2fps 44.7fps

MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE K6-2-300 ON SUPER SOCKET 7 $99 MOTHERBOARD
IS AS FAST AS PENTIUM II -300 ON WINBENCH '98.

The K6-300 used to be somewhat slower than a Pentium II-300 on
Winbench'98, now the K6-2 is equal.

The K6-300 used to perform like an MMX-233 on Quake, now the
K6-2-300 is faster than a Pentium II-350.

Finally, it is incorrect to say that this GL-Quake is optimized for
the K6-3D. It merely uses the OPEN-GL API written by Microsoft (?) and
optimized for 3D-NOW! technology. Expect a lot more OPEN-GL games to
run fast on K6-2 just like GL-Quake.
