James, are you familiar with Axent's intrusion detection product? I recall a press release of theirs a while back that claimed they had a large market share lead in this category (something like 40%).

I thought it was interesting to see Microsoft bought Firefly, a security software company designing around "agents" which is something new coming out of Java, also known as "Aglets". It looks like this will be an interesting direction in the future. Do you here anything about this area?

I can see a guy in charge of buying security has really got his career online if they get seriously hacked. Probably is job protection to by a standard. You don't get any awards for not geting hacked. You only get dumped on when it happens.

If you go to your boss and say I bought the best standard, what can he say? On the other hand, if you bought an off brand and got hacked, you're sacked.

I'm also interested in Axent. Raptor sure seemed to lead the pack reviews, but Checkpoint got the better OEM agreements and have built a very reputable business. Still, I hold both companies and my Raptor investment has soared since joining Axent.

Regards,

Mark

Thanks for your comparison of various products in this sector. I have heard IPSEC recommended as well from consultants, versus the Microsoft implementation (?socks). Any more news on intrusion detection technologies is greatly appreciated. Is this a competing area to firewalls, or generally chosen to augment them? What does our thread think of the annual report? I miss those old geezers like Frank and Roger also. HA! 8/) tim
