Peter:
There are three nuclear powers in Asia within miles of each other. It is my opinion that China, India and Pakistan should get together and work out a non-aggression treaty. These three countries should get together periodically to ensure that they express faith in the non-aggression policy.

China, India and Pakistan should leave the borders as they are at present and should not have their military stationed at the international borders.

These three countries also should agree that no one will engage in first nuclear strike.

As a matter of good faith and in the interest of nonproliferation, they should open all the nuclear facilities to each other and international inspection. They should sign a regional test ban and nonproliferation treaties.

I am sure that you and others can find other features to add.

If none of these things are forthcoming, there will be trouble in South Asia. Since India is used to democracy, I doubt very much that India will divide along the lines of language and ethnicity. Furthermore , the military is a non-political entity and therefore a unifying force in India.

Pakistan is an Islamic nation. But that does not guarantee a national integrity or unity. The nation is pulled apart by regional factions and is not used to democratic values. The only time the pakistanis come together is when they have to face India. They have their own problems with in Islam and its subdivisions, just like caste system in India. Islam by itself is not a unifying force. If the economic situation deteriorates on account of imposed sanctions, the first to be blamed will be India, later America, and subsequently each other. It is fervently hoped that pakistan does not engage in diversion and start a war.

The Islamic Bomb and Israel: Israel is just an observer of the events happening in South Asia. If Israel gets one whiff of nuclear threat. they will deliver a suitable response, preemptively, to which they are known and they are experts at what they do. US will not be sitting idle under those circumstances.
