.... I filled out a "flat tax" form on a card... Interesting that you fill out 20 pages to complete all your deductions. Since you have that many deductions don't you benefit from a lower taxable income and therefor pay less than you would under a flat tax?

BAP, I'm so sick of the government taking money out of one guy's pocket and putting it into another's, I agree with you that we need tax simplification, but as you point out, the tax system is the tool by which pols reward their contributors, so they will be reluctant to change it. Furthermore, the current system has turned the IRS into our own version of the KGB, whose acts rival those of the midnight knock on the door so feared in Communist countries and other dictatorships. Our only saving quality is the freedom of the press and their competitive need to publish bad news. Yes, the press may often be abusive, but Jefferson (often himself the victim of a scurrilous press) was right when said that it was preferable to have newspapers without a government than a government without newspapers. Let's face it. Our political system is corrupt, the Clinton scandals just being the zenith of the corruption, and most of it could be ended with two simple steps: 1. Abolish the IRS. I don't give a damn what replaces it, flat tax or consumption tax. 2. Abolish soft money contributions, or make them limited to the amount individuals can contribute. The free speech argument is specious, and it's sad to see Sen. McConnell defending the indefensible. Jack
