Nope, Intel's manufacturing prowress (higher speed versions and higher speed caches) far outpaces the low end competitors.

Re -- Compaq's Alpha is now the stand-alone top line NT workstation
box.

Actually 6 months wont make a bit of difference, and alpha will compete with AS/400 and PA-RISC derivatives as it always has.
Furthermore Compaq could stand to LOSE more, because of its "lack of attention" to alpha development since it could be replaced by the merced.

Its just that the snapshot has moved 6 months.

Close.. but.. Actually the Visual PC is NOT a Merced, it is the
32 bit CPU as in the annoucements. The SGIs Merced machines were
and still planned for the 2000-2001 timeframe, per the April 12
annoucements by SGI.

Completely correct about the MIPS until the Merced is ready..
