Hi Beachbumm - This author agrees too that a Merced delay could be bullish for Sunw..
(https://www.siliconinvestor.com/readmsg.aspx?msgid=4653557)

From the article:

"...But the delay provides an opportunity for Unix vendor Sun Microsystems, processor maker International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) and Digital Equipment Corp.(DEC), which sells the speedy Alpha chip..."

"...A late Merced, however, is a blow for vendors planning on its timely arrival, including Hewlett-Packard, Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI), Sequent Computer Systems Inc. (SQNT) and even Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), which is relying on powerful hardware to run its Windows NT 5.0 operating system..."

====================================================================

IMO the biggest impact will be to HWP. Let's hope SUNW can gain more market share from HWP as new customers look to SUNW for their solutions. Sunw has an upgrade path that will utilize BOTH the Sparc processor and "when available" the Merced chip. HWP bet the ranch on the Merced upgrade and will be hurt by any delay accordingly.

P.S. SUN EXPANDS DEVELOPER EARLY ACCESS PROGRAM FOR 64-BIT SOLARIS
MENLO PARK, CALIF., MAY 19, 1998
(http://192.9.9.100/smi/Press/sunflash/9805/sunflash.980519.1.html)

"...Unlike other operating environments, Solaris is tuned for network computing and exploits the full capability of both SPARCTM and Intel-based computers. It is extremely fast, highly reliable, scalable, secure, very easy to install and use, optimized for Java and supports more than 12,000 applications..."

Now let's hope IBM adopts SOLARIS as their standard Unix based OS....

I think the INTC announcement about delays in Merced is extremely bullish for SUNW and IBM.

In the medium 1-2 yr. term I certainly agree the delay has the potential to increase revenues for Sun and IBM servers. Especially Sun, since they are more and more becoming the best at doing large servers. In the real world, this is surely a blow to the Wintel camp.

However, what will happen on Monday? That's a very different question. It's possible that the big boys will dump the sector en masse again, tarring everybody, even SUNW, with the Merced brush. Of course it doesn't make any sense; SUNW should gap up while all Wintel server OEM captives should suffer. But since when does the market's handling of SUNW make sense?

Regards,

Beachbumm, you are correct...SUNW indicated up and I am sure the upgrade is related to the delay from Intel...
