Zoltan,

political spending in a Presidential election year
amounts to less than the amount spent on advertising yogurt.

Yes, but how about $1,000,000 from Bernard Schwartz? That's a lot of yogurt. But we know he got it back when that waiver was signed. If that isn't corruption, I won't recognize it when I do see it.

It is indeed helpful that our free press lets us know about this contribution, but the majority of Americans aren't so informed and don't buy anything from Loral anyway. So I'm not so sure full disclosure will make any difference. We see everyday (with Clinton's popularity polls) how much the average guy cares about ethics in government.

I'm not a lawyer, but defending Schwartz's contribution on the basis of the constitutional right to free speech, sounds very much to me like the constitutional right to abortion based on privacy. (The pros or cons of abortion are another issue and not included in my comment.)

The best reform of all would be to limit the power of government so that people like Clinton would not be able to run shake-downs and sell policy in the first place.

We're together on that one.

Best,

Jack
