SidStock: I think that Intel did not underestimate anything, this delay, IMHO, is simply to allow them to log in more life onto their PII line. I see no reason for them to get to market with Merced before 2000.

I also think that this tactic will allow them to use elements of the "wafer scale integration" technology (which never succeeded under Trilogy) gotten from the DEC Alpha acquisition into their design. If the market was clamoring for the Merced, they would have accelerated it.

It could also be to let the competition know that there is no rush to beat INTC to the specmanship and then, "surprise" the competition with another chip (intermediate to PII and Merced) out of nowhere, once more leaving AMD and (Now) NSM bitting the dust in the high end segment, where INTC makes most of its profits.
