Re: Sin (and the other Quake2-based games - Half-Life, Diakatana, Heretic II, Q2 Mission Packs)

If I had not seen and played "Unreal" (for 14 hours!) before going to the show, I'd be telling you how absolutely awesome these games looked. And while they do look very good, one thing was very clear to me as I left the show - "Unreal" has significantly raised the bar and no one else is close right now.

(Keep in mind that at a conference like this it is very hard to get a true sense of the level-design and play-balance issues. I was only able to spend about 15 minutes watching each of these games closely.)

That said, the best-of-the-rest, by far, was "Half-Life." The weapons and monster AI are awesome and the look of the levels is significantly better than Quake2. Lots of very unique behaviors and capabilities - many of them very humorous. It will be a huge hit. Release in 2-3 months.

In the #2 spot is Daikatana (from John Romereo, one of the authors of Doom and Quake). The look and feel of this game is similar to Hexen II - midevil, dark, lots of magical weapons. Release in 3-4 months.

Sin was #3 - the levels I saw were very bright (slightly "cartoony") and the Monster AI was extremely poor. Among the weapons were two nice touches - a great sniper rifle (ala BattleZone) and the trusty shotgun from Doom(!) which works very well. Release in 1-2 months.

Heretic II is unique in that you view things from outside your body in chase-cam mode. Fortunately, they've done a lot of work to make sure the chase-cam is always properly positioned. Release in 2-3 months.

The Q2 Mission Pack #2 looks just like Quake2 (shock!) but it did have an extra weapon that was _very_ satisfying to use. It's a lightning gun similar to the one in Quake1 but with a _much_ more powerful beam. Run to the center of a room full of monster, turn this sucker on and do a 360-degree turn! Gib city! Release in 1-2 months.

One final note: I saw Quake 2 running on a Nintendo. Now, I know I spoiled with my current setup, but it literally looked like someone threw oatmeal on the screen - blurry, low-res, fuzzy lighting, yuck! It will probably sell like crazy, but it shouldn't. Hopefully people will upgrade to PCs with V2 cards after playing it for a while.

<OT> Re: SB Live as Home Theater - This could very well could be true. Everyone should realize that I was evaluating it mostly from a pure-gamer perspective. However, the marketing pitch at the show was definitely gamer oriented and "Unreal" was the only demo they showed.
