Examples abound throughout history of original companies creating breakthrough technology and other companies capitalizing it and outmarketing the original company thus grabbing almost all the marketshare. A classic example of this is Nikola Tesla vs. Edison. Tesla created alternating power, without which Edison's new electric power plants (which were DC) were next to useless. Edison copied Tesla's technology, applied it to his powerplants, and the rest is history.
