Interesting...however, companies like Yahoo, Infoseek, and AltaVista are not really technology companies. They are media companies. These companies don't create the majority of their content, they just provide a central location to access info provided by other players. Just take a look at the portal sites and see how much of the content is actually created by the portal. Most of it is taken from other outside sources. Compaq can easily do this with little effort.

In order for AltaVista to be successful...it must remain free to the public and rely on advertising If Yahoo and Excite can do it, so can Compaq. Yahoo and Excite had revenues of $30 million and $23 million, respectively this past quarter. No reason with Compaq's marketing muscle they can't become one of the top 3 web portals and even turn a profit. What if Compaq sells every one of their consumer PC's with a default Alta Vista boot-up/portal screen. Can you imagine the possiblity? Compaq can create a portal powerhouse overnight!

With the number of internet users doubling every six months wouldn't it seem a little premature to IPO AV. Think of e-commerce, advertising $$$$, and the credibility Compaq's brand name immediately gives to AV. IMO, Compaq should give AV an opportunity, see how things work out. If things don't go well, IPO AV next year.

Caisson
