Cabletron Announces Significant Price Reductions and Firmware Enhancements for GIGAswitch/ATM
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 1, 1998--In conjunction with a new comprehensive ATM program, Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS - news) today announced at the ATM Year '98 trade show, drastic price reductions for GIGAswitch/ATM modules. Targeting high-bandwidth applications such as voice, video, and data, customers can now order modules at up to 42% off their original list price, making ATM solutions more affordable.

The GIGAswitch/ATM, a product family that was integrated into Cabletron's ATM Program with the acquisition of the DIGITAL Network Products Group, offers customers the choice of either a 5-slot or 14-slot modular chassis. The multi-mode fiber 622M bps module is priced at $9,675 and the single-mode fiber 622M bps module is priced at $11,495.

Also announced today are enhancements to the GIGAswitch/ATM firmware version 2.7 which is available free of charge at www.networks.digital.com to existing GIGAswitch/ATM customers. Version 2.7 includes increased virtual path termination capability for wide area network configurations, increased VPI range, increased security and improved CBR load handling that optimizes the use of valuable bandwidth in the WAN. Future enhancements will be in version 3.0 and will include PNNI 1.0 and a new 622M bps line card with redundant optics for providing transparent failover in redundant link environments.

New Web-Based Management

Also introduced are several new firmware enhancements to version 2.7 which include web-based management and improved WAN integration features. The GIGAswitch/ATM can be managed from any frames-compatible Web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. JAVA applets allow the administrator to view switch data and monitor interfaces in a user-friendly manner.
