More on Maxtor 11.5 Gig, & an overclocking warning.

Well, I now have the maxtor up and running beautifully, and it's playing nicely with powerquest stuff, NT, and my Supermicro P5mma98's bios. Several points might be of interest:

-The culprit was inadvertant overclocking! Turns out that my 37.5 mhz PCI bus was running too fast for NT and powerquest stuff to consistently read the Maxtor without errors. Ironically, in this case I was running both the motherboard and the CPU (a Cyrix 686MX, or "M2") within spec--but their 75 meg memory bus speed means that the PCI bus is effectively "overclocked" by just over 10%. This is the first component I've ever had a problem with--but then again, it makes sense why. Powerquest products and loaded NT bootups will tax a hard drive as much as just about anything, I reckon. The symptoms were so unlike what I was expecting, tho, that it had me stumped for 2 days.

-The drive is just a wonderful performer. It noticably speeds up performance when compared with the Quantum 6.4 Fireball it will replace.

-I upped my NT swap file to 125 megs to start (with 64 meg ram), and put it on the main OS partition. This seems to work well.

-I did need an NT post service-pack 3 hotfix from the Microsoft site to get the drive recognized beyond 8.4 gigs: atafixi.exe. once that was installed, I had no further problems with NT.

-After some deliberation, I partitioned the drive as follows:

c: 500 meg FAT with 95/NT (primary partition)

(extended partition)

d: 1 gig NTFS NT partition, with main NT install.
e: 5 gig NTFS data and apps partition
f: 4.5 gig "storage" partition for drive images, drivers, etc.

I'll elaborate further on why if anyone has questions.

I decided to hold off on the FastTrak for now, since everything's working OK, but I'm still eying it closely.
