Silver lining to Intel's bad news?
Consider this:
Many businesses have decided to postpone addressing the Y2K problem with the thought they would replace major systems with the Merced based systems in 1999. Now that Intel announced Merced will be "delayed", corporate MIS Directors decide they can't afford to gamble by waiting on Merced and start the upgrade process now. Bad news becomes good news (or at least less bad). Intel sells more profit rich 300-400MHz chips this year.

In mid 1999, Intel mysteriously solves all production woes and starts distributing Merced. (Just a thought?)
