The following are the reasons why I believe that Ballard has a leadership position:

-Traditional fuel cell technology, which depends on materials such as solid oxides and phosphoric acid as electrolytes was not practical because such electrolytes DECOMPOSE over time, and frequent maintenance is necessary. The polymers that Ballard developed are capable of functioning for a very long time without maintenance (please don't get me wrong, I haven't tested Ballard's fuel cells myself, but I believe that Daimler-Benz and Ford has).

-Additionally, Ballard pioneered the light-weight fuel cell and was issued several patents on these improvements as well. I think this has the potential of effectively replacing the internal combustion engine for portable and small applications.

Concerning the "glass" membrane, I still think that this is funny.

I'll retreive the IFC patents, take a look at them, and get back to you within a few days.

(Oh, by the way, thanks for not calling me "unqualified" in your last message. Thanks WAFA for coming to my rescue earlier).

Mr. Lum--- this was an excellent informative post for which I thank you. It was especially good to see no slams or confrontational comments. Facts speak for themselves without rancor. Nice work!
