>>any hard data on a relationship between VECO and IBM<< I found the following very general implication drawn from the 10K via the profile at exchange2000.com
>>The Company sells its products worldwide to many of the leading data storage and semiconductor manufacturers, including Seagate Technology, Inc. ("Seagate"), Read-Rite Corp. ("Read-Rite"), IBM Corporation ("IBM"), Motorola, Inc. ("Motorola"), Applied Magnetics Corp. ("AMC"), Mitsubishi Semiconductor ("Mitsubishi") and Quantum Corp. ("Quantum"). In addition, the Company sells its products to companies in the flat panel display and high frequency device industries, as well as to other industries, research and development centers and universities.<<

If you would be so kind, please compare that profile with that of Micrion at exchange2000.com

Neither mentions other as a competitor but it seems they are in same business, namely ion beam trimmers among other applications. Am I seeing something which is not there? Or am I not seeing something?

One relationship between IBM and VECO is that IBM developed and manufactures the Atom Force Microscope which VECO resells. Now VECO has purchased Digital instruments which also makes its own AFMs, so I don't know how that will affect that relationship. AFMs are used as research tools in a variety of applications, and are now being used for disk head manufacturing:

Another relationship between IBM and VECO is that I believe they do some joint research in the disk area. I presume that IBM specifies what they are looking for in a tool, and VECO works at meeting those specifications.
