The Alpha is the basis for VAX (decaying but still a $5B business) where it runs VMS. Second most popular Alpha OS is DEC Unix, which is about $3B. Alpha NT is about half of that, best as I can tell. But Alpha runs all three - VMS, Unix and NT. It is the fastest NT chip currently available. All of these numbers are pretty puny compared to say CPQ volume, but CPQ could change that if they want to.

But your point about native SW is well taken - that's why it won't likely be a mainstream chip but will be for servers and high end workstations, where a few apps make all the difference.
