From IBD:

Server Shipments Decline, Lifting Firms' Inventories
Date: 6/2/98

PC server shipments fell 11% in the first quarter from the fourth quarter of 1997. Both Compaq and IBM lost market share, forcing them to cut prices to stimulate demand, according to researcher International Data Corp. An IDC report said price cuts will lead to a shakeout of weaker players. Worldwide, the weak first quarter meant an annual shipment growth rate of 28%, or 491,000 PC servers shipped.

RE: <<Wouldn't you agree that the margins that Intel would receive from Alpha sales would be, relatively, so much smaller than those for Merced that they could never seriously contemplate such a strategy?>>

Another problem is that the version of NT native to Alpha is different from the version native to X86, and Merced will be backward compatible with X86, not Alpha. Since Merced was mainly for use running NT, this raises all kinds of compatibility issues. Just another reason why Intel is very unlikely to seriously follow an Alpha strategy, even in the interim while Merced is being made ready.
