Whoa there. Are you sure Compaq lost market share? I don't have the figures in front of me, but I distinctly remember Compaq gaining a lot of market share, precisely because they discounted their PC steeply. The way I remember it, they took a big loss to margins and profits but gained market share (up to 17% I think, but I'll check on that).
