ok Dave, let's speculate on what a better estimate is for '99. How about $1.60... Order momentum looks great.

TD, agreed to an extent. I was thinking Voice over IP over Ether (or GE). The access/desktop data battle has been pretty much ceded to less expensive embedded technologies (Ether/GE...), but when it gets to putting in the backbone, isn't the discussion whether to scale ether pipes to gigabit speeds or to go to ATM/FR? Players like Qwest are talking IP over Ether/GE or SONET w/WDM, not IP over FR/ATM, right? A bunch of CLECs are talking about an IP over a switched ether network for voice. Also, Internet backbone is not all ATM (?), right?

Business/Service Provider nets may be IP, etc. over FR/ATM. But what about the Internet? It's IP over ether.

All this loose understanding notwithstanding, I still think that in time ATM will rule in serious carrier backbone networks (which will have a major impact down into Fortune 500 corp backbones).
