Voice over IP

Billy Joe/Trader Dave

Let me see if I can add some input on this discussion. The way to break down communications is two ways. Datacommunications is either local (LAN) and ethernet (fast ethernet/gigabit ethernet) is the technology to use - and again this is for local data traffic within the office), or non-local (or WAN) that requires the interface with the phone company (and where ATM fits best - small packets make it easier to transmit over long distances, and you don't have to worry about competing against Cisco - no one will rip out their exisitng ethernet network to replace it with an ATM network - like no one will disband Microsoft to go with a different/better OS)

Communications can be thought of as voice communications and datacommunications. For voice over IP, you have to find an overlay that fits with the current architecture, to take voice off of the existing Class 5 switch network. The most important thing to keep in mind that the voice network has two main parts to it. Transmission (which is where the Sonet standard fits in) and switching (which is where ATM fits in). One of the biggest misconceptions about all of this is that somehow Sonet is involved in switching. Sonet is a transmission technology. You do not have any switch capability with Sonet (what is Sonet - a standard that defines the hierarchy of payloads for optical TRANSMISSION). There are other concepts about switching IP packets, but ATM is the technology for switching in the WAN.

Hope this helps.
