ADSL is definately *NOT* hype. If you are serviced by GTE, then chances are you can order it today for home or business. (They just started taking orders a few days ago).

Where I live, in Plano, TX (which is also the location of DSC), it
was rolled out (in trials) more than a year ago, with various vendors competing for the "modems". The ISPs here are also scrambling to offer the service, and GTE is cooperating (law says they have to, but GTE is making it easier then you would expect).

Microsoft's forecast for ADSL acceptance is wrong. Furthermore, the O/S only needs the same TCP/IP and associated services for ADSL as it would have for any external modem or networking card.

I disagree. the tellabs/ciena merger is clear evidence of the value of xDSl as an edge solution. I.E. if the edge is opened, the backbone is going to have to add capacity. If the xDSL is hype I don't believe you see some of whats going on today...
