WSJ Leading Article: Intel Shares Fall on Growing Worries About PC Market, Future Earnings

Excerpt from main article in the Interactive Edition.

The industry -- and Intel in particular -- is being squeezed by forces that include the unprecedented rise of sub-$1,000 PCs, weak economic conditions in Asia and the lingering effects of a chip buildup at major PC makers in the first quarter. Robert Chaplinsky, a Hambrecht & Quist analyst who cut his earnings estimates Wednesday, said he believes U.S. retail sales of PCs were disappointing in the first two months of the second quarter and that sales in Europe are also beginning to show seasonal softness.

"With this worse-than-expected and weakening environment, we don't believe Intel will be able to turn the amount of business in the final month of the quarter to meet our microprocessor revenue estimates," said Mr. Chaplinsky in a report that helped to trigger the Intel sell-off. He cut his second-quarter profit estimate to 65 cents a diluted share from 69 cents, and his 1998 estimate to $2.92 a share from $3.04 a share.

Intel's approaching price cuts, which weren't expected, were seen as a
particularly troubling sign that even the company's most sought-after
products are selling slowly.

Not a pretty picture, but is the current bearishness overdone?

Vinman,
I remember you shorting CPQ at about 33. Good call. Did you close your short on CPQ today. If not better jump on it tomorrow. It got some good reports today and the FTC approval came through tonight.

My trading ability and portfolio would make you look like chump change
Speculating again I see....I don't recall at any time posting what I do for a living or what I invest in on SI. Applying your investing techniques (the overstatement of the year) to your analysis of individuals has already lost you any credability on this thread....in much the same way you lost your shirt. <VBG>
Whatever you say Vermin. ;-)
You are da man!
