Most cases come with a small mounted speaker that you hook to the mobo. They generally are sufficient for beeps etc IF your work environment isn't too noisy.

SW, are you sure? Do you ever listen to a sound clip off the
web? Do you ever play screen cam stuff? Have you tried
any of the internet connectivity sofware to converse with
people (Netmeeting is free, and it works)?

Many apps nowadays just won't run or run poorly if there's
no sound card present. Different sounds signal different
events -- I can tell from the next room whether I just got
a mail message or a dialog box popped up, for instance.
NT service pack 3 will crash your
system if you don't at least have the low-level sound
drivers installed (I wish this weren't the voice of experience,
but I'm afraid it is). Both NT and 95 essentially assume
you have a sound card. Do you trust them to behave without
one?

You can get a serviceable sound card for well under $100.
Yes, it will use a couple of IRQs and DMA channels, but not
a PCI slot unless you go for high end (which doesn't sound
likely and is certainly not necessary). I'm afraid I have
to disagree with the other folks on this one. Your deaf to
the world without it.

Good luck,

Spots

>>Yep, that's all I need...beeps, whistles, ect
I don't play music or games...am I missing out on something? <ggg>
I just assumed a computer had to have a sound card and speakers
to produce a beep here and a beep there.
So I just by a small speaker and plug it in where?<<

If you purchase an Asus P2B-L motherboard you connect the speaker to the Creative SB-Link Header. According to the Asus P2B-L feature list,
reproduced below, the Asus P2B-L has built in Creative Sound Blaster sound capability.

However, I am not familiar with the terms CPU & Power Supply Temperature Headers, Chassis Intrusion Heater and SM Bus Header.
Would any body care to explain these code words?
