Seriously, I have no idea, but I would assume it had to do with cutting, which would of course require a FIB. As for the find, I was re-reading the entire VECO thread tonight to clear up a few things in my own mind, and bumped into the answer to your question.

Now, what's your excuse for being up this late?

appro, re head trimming

An ion beam is used to trim the head to the proper
design width. As track density increases,
accurate head width becomes more important. Too
wide a head would interfere with adjacent tracks,
too narrow would yield a read signal that has
lower amplitude (therefore lower S/N ratio)
than desired. Head trimming also helps avoid
the problem of misalignment between the two pole tips.
