Of course Mr Van Miert isn't going to be satisfied with the curent offer to dispose of part of the Internet backbone.

Mr Van Miert is going to make his presence felt in an attempt to justify his whole depart ment and to gain fame and glory from having imposed the EU's will ( translate his and his officials will) on an industry the future dynamics of which not many people on this planet understand today never mind Mr Van Miert and his officials.

The whole thing is of course insanity given the postition of the national carriers of say Greece or Portugal or even Germany for that matter. But this is a rather unique opportunity for an ambitious Euro official to make a real big name for himself and you'd better believe he's going to do it.

By the way are these EU types allowed to take nice non-exec board positions after they retire from the EU? HMmmmm.
