I found this article about XCIT and I cut and pasted the section with the quotes from Infoseek....I am glad to see them expanding more internationally..

"though the agreement with Sinanet was not as broad as the new Italian venture, it was another indication of the race by leading Internet services to penetrate overseas and foreign-language markets, even as they are locked in a fierce competition within the United States.

Several Internet companies said Wednesday they are extending their overseas efforts beyond the biggest markets like Germany and Japan, and into those where the Internet has not yet caught on as a popular consumer medium.

"There is a general need to plant your flag in as many markets as possible, even if that market can not yet support very deep services," said Barak Berkowitz, Vice President of international operations at Infoseek.

While the U.S. remains the world leader in terms of total number of people online, Berkowitz said a number of countries or regions have a deeper Web penetration by population.

Infoseek's biggest international venture to date is in Germany, and Berkowitz said it plans to announce an alliance in Japan "fairly soon."

However, he said he is also looking closely at regions like Australia, Scandinavia and Southeast Asia, areas where Internet penetration is light but expected to accelerate rapidly."

Good evening fellow SEEKers,

Kind of a slow week for SEEK. Not really too much news to offer up except this link to yet another portal article:
abcnews.com

They do have an informal poll asking you which is your favorite portal site. Interesting that SEEK came in 3rd with 16.3% of the vote. Yahoo was #1 (26.4%) and Netscape was #2 (19.3%). Lycos was last with 1.3%.

Have a good weekend and happy SEEKing...
