Never overestimate IBM.

IBM's Power PC, in terms of market acceptance, is of no match to the P-II line, and OS-2 is almost non existent today. Power PC is not cheap. So, what capability are you talking about? If IBM-produced Cyrix CPUs are not going anywhere, which they are not, why do you expect IBM-produced K6's to be of any importance?

IBM has great innovations, yes, but innovations not utilized to make money in the near future but far into the future. In your example, IBM has bragged about a laboratory curiosity --- copper technology. This technology is not going to be of any significance in 0.12um the earliest, more likely 0.10um.

The Wintel weed grown in IBM garden is not a weed any more. In fact, the descendent of this weed is blossoming into a useful crop. IBM basically gave away a very profitable market almost 20 years ago. Its stock price reflected this inept management from the crash of '87 to mid '90s. Only when Intel's Pentium line became so popular, IBM also became a profitable investment again. IBM has depended on Intel and Microsoft weed ever since!

Although IBM does not like to see Intel becoming the monopoly of x86 CPUs, how much cash is IBM willing to pour into the money-eating bottomless pit of Intel's competitors? IBM denied the rumors of taking over AMD. You cannot blame any one for not to swallow a poisonous pill.

National appears to make concession with Intel on conquer-and-divide while AMD is going after Intel like a berserker, a whaco warrior of the ancient Viking raiders. As long as AMD stock is trading between $15 to $20 a share, there is no buy-out probability nor ability to generate more capital. It looks like Intel has control its competitions, down to where Intel wants them to be.

Perhaps, Intel should buy out AMD's Computational Business Unit if FTC approves it. That way, AMD can exit out of x86 business saving face and getting desperately needed capital.

Well said. They have revenues about five times Microsoft's,
in fact they make more on their service contracts than
Microsoft makes in total. They also have a lot of smart
guys in their employ . . . I know this from experience, having
worked at five different IBM locations as a co-op student
when I was in school.
