I always have that fearful feeling after holding Premisys (PRMS) overnight before they came out with an earnings warning. Dropped from $16 to $8 overnight. I've had numerous bad run ins holding long through an earnings announcement. The latest was calls on Peoplesoft (PSFT) and the earnings were good and they got an immediate 20% haircut and I promptly turned $4,000 into $375. I've had too many to count make 10% to 15% moves on news opposite to my position. There is no way to predict these events when there have been no company leaks showing up in the charts. I often play concentrated positions, so holding overnight can be especially risky during warning's announcement season. I don't ever hold any long positons over an earnings announcement anymore. I don't mind being short though. Usually even good numbers get slam dunked.
