I don't think it defeats the purpose of the whole mci deal.
MCI is worldwide brand name recognition. A fortune 500 customer list buying services from wcoms' vast array will move the stock. WCOM has just so many strengths worldwide that the loss of the mci internet portion is only a speed bump.
The EU thing is scary and getting scarier. The bad guy does seem to be a bit power struck when reading his responses to the MCI offer to sell their backbone.
All imho.

Anthony -

Mr Van Miert will make a name for himself if WCOM loses a major deal. What downside does Mr Van Miert have if he stops the deal entirely? His upside is that he becomes a big hero in the EU!!!

Ford GM or IBM they probably wouldn't mess with but WCOM .....who really cares if WCOM gets its deal or not? how many people in Europe have even heard of WCOM or know what it does or what it will do after it bought MCI. And maybe someone in Europe is upset that WCOM was going to get MCI and maybe they have influence and would be very happy with Mr. Van Miert stopping it or taking some of the beneift away.

See there are all sorts in this pot. Some of of the toughest characters outside of the bar scene in StarWars!

I never really thought about it before but after last week I think WCOM will be lucky if it gets a deal it can live with.
