ADSL phone line from SWBell is about $75 per month.
ÿ
The ADSL modems are about $900 per modem and you will need two.<-- ?
ÿ
The ADSL port charge for Internet Access is $250 per month if you are a home user and $1,000 per month if it is for Business Use.

Eric has asked:

Based on your review of the new 3COM, what type of business plan
have you seen that will allow 3COM to participate in this emerging
technology?

It is my belief that the time has come and gone for ISDN. The future
battle will be between ADSL and Cable Modem. I favor Cable Modem as
reaching most of the world's population at the fastest speed with the
least cost. There is a nice story on ADSL vs Cable Modem at:
zdnet.com:80/pccomp/features/excl0698/crossroads/cable.html
The problem with Cable Modems is, of course, the cable companies,
themselves. They do not have the money that is required to become ISPs
in addition to the service they provide now. 3COM is trying to jump-start
the industry by selling their Cable Modems directly to the consumer. I
posted to this a while back, see press release: 3com.com
This is not to say that these emerging technologies will appear soon.
I think that we are talking Y2K and beyond. That is to say that the
speed is nice, but most people do not NEED it, only WANT it and are
NOT willing to pay the $50/mo. required. 56K is fast enough for Internet
(as constituted today) access for MOST people. The buying plans for
1998 are shown here: 56k.com

I was told that 3COM had done some early R&D work with TCI but I
was not clear if it resulted in any product.

There clearly IS to be a product. From the press release at:
3com.com one finds:
"3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) today announced it has been selected
by TCI.NET, a division of Tele-Communications, Inc. (TCI) to provide
high-speed cable modems and broadband networking equipment for its
deployment of multimedia services to the residential market."
