you are right about long-term vs trading. i think i read in Smart Money that if you bought $10k AMAT in early 1990's you would have $900k (before the Asia currency crisis). Like you said, no guarantee we can say the same thing in 2008. But the semi-eqiup industry cyclical nature is so volatile that an astute (and extremely lucky) trader can make a fortune on longs and shorts in a few years.
even if you bought AMAT in the 50's last fall and held on now, i am pretty sure you could sell it for a nice profit 2 to 3 years from now.
Adding at these lows (i would wait til after summer though) and selling 2 to 3 years from now, i am sure you can easily triple your investment in my opinion.
